Over 300 volunteers join hands for coastal clean-up and tree planting in this year’s Ecoblast at Boranday Beach Resort in Brgy. Baras, Palo, Leyte this morning, February 1.

Faculty, staff, and students, along with Miss Philippines Earth 2024 Irha Mel Alfeche, Miss Philippines Earth – Air 2024 Feliz Clareianne Thea Recentes, and members of the Rotary Club of San Juanico Tacloban, Rotaract Club of SPSPS San Juanico, Rotaract Club of San Juanico (Community-Based), and Interact Club of SPSPS San Juanico, clean the coastal trail, removing waste such as wrappers, sachets, bottles, and plastics, while also planting trees to restore denuded lands along the shoreline.

In a statement, School President Dr. Erwin Vincent G. Alcala, CPA, stressed the growing environmental challenges that the world faces today, emphasizing the urgency of collective action.

“By being here today, we are reminded of our responsibility to care for our planet. Climate change, pollution, and deforestation continue to threaten our environment. But together, through education, advocacy, and sustainable action, we can make a difference,” said Pres. Alcala.

According to the report by the Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Clean Up, the Philippines is the third-largest contributor to plastic waste in the ocean, responsible for about 3.9 million metric tons of plastic waste annually.

In her speech, Miss Alfeche underscored the responsibility each individual carries in protecting the planet for future generations.

“Every little action that we can create, we can have a big impact. Our actions will reflect our future generation,” Alfeche emphasized.

On the other hand, Miss Recentes, lauded SPSPS for its yearly proactive collaboration with the Miss Philippines Earth Foundation in promoting environmental advocacy.

“It is important that not we are only embodying our causes [and] our advocacies but we are also being able to educate and empower each and everyone to do the same,” said Recentes.

The annual Ecoblast, part of the institution’s year-long 30th founding anniversary, highlights one of the institution’s goals: to showcase various ways and methods of demonstrating love for Mother Earth in every interaction with both humans and non-humans.

SPSPS has made and continually moves toward becoming an environmentally conscious institution by supporting environmental initiatives such as the institution’s 7S Policy and No Plastic Policy.
