SPSPS partners with DOH EV for PFA training
Recognizing the need to support the mental health and well-being of the Paulinian community, Saint Paul School of Professional Studies (SPSPS) partners with the Department of Health (DOH) Eastern Visayas for a training focused on Psychological First Aid (PFA) on October 23-25 at the Manuel Ngo Student Center.
Organized by the Center for Guidance and Career Services, Center for Health Services and Wellness, Ward Advising and Faculty Development, Human Resource Management Office, and the Rotary Club of San Juanico Tacloban, faculty members and administrative staff gain the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively improve their mental health and assist students who may be struggling with early signs of mental health issues through the conduct of PFA.
Among the key topics discussed by the resource speakers from the DOH Eastern Visayas—Ms. Winnie C. Dorego, RN, Mr. Sylvan Perpiñan, RN, Ms. Doreen Garchitorena, RN, and Mr. Arnold G. Josep, Jr., — are the fundamentals of mental health, understanding adolescents, principles of PFA, common reactions to stress, coping strategies, facilitation techniques, and self-care.
Moreover, Mr. Marvin Allen Guy-Joco, RN, CLC, Development Management Officer IV of DOH EV for Health Development Provincial DOH Office – North Leyte, emphasized that the stigma connected with mental health conditions is also still prevalent especially here in Region 8. In Guy-Joco’s talk, he further acknowledged the continuous involvement of SPSPS in actively supporting various health initiatives.
The said three-day event aligns with the mission of SPSPS to enhance mental well-being and equip our community with essential support skills.
In his closing remarks, School President Dr. Erwin Vincent G. Alcala, CPA, highlights the institution’s commitment to actively seeking innovative ways to support the mental health and well-being of its employees and students.
Pres. Alcala mentioned the implementation of designated mental health breaks in the upcoming semester, recognizing the need for time dedicated to relaxation and self-care for both teachers and students.
