HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The research unit of Saint Paul School of Professional Studies (SPSPS) started three years after the school’s founding in 1994. With a team composed of a director and a coordinator-designate, the unit was housed in a makeshift room beside the Computer Education and Application Center of the then Saint Paul’s Business School of Tacloban. The concept of the Research Center started with its agenda presented before the Board of Trustees. In 2000, a strategic plan was adopted and the Center metamorphosed into a department with another director appointed. Produced were a research journal, a quarterly newsletter, and a weekly publication.
The Center also doubled as an Extension Office, which made SPSPS as the lone partner school co-operator in the Visayas. A project of the Countryside Entrepreneurship Development Program (CEDP) of the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ, now GIZ) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) gained recognition as top implement of Competency-Based Economy through the Formation of Entrepreneurs (CEFE) trainings. Until now, SPSPS is a member of the Land Administration and Management Program (LAMP) – Academic Partnership and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Zonal Research Group.
Dynamic in movement, the Center was restructured under a new director. This time, it focused on extension services to as many as the number of municipalities in Leyte and Southern Leyte, providing CEFE’s unique way of business development services to both potential and existing entrepreneurs. The Center went forward and new plans were laid: new administration perspectives, tighter implementation of research as a major thrust of the school, and a broader yet more focused leadership direction. From identifying and overcoming challenges to integrating what the researchers learn and apply to their everyday environment, the Center serves the school and supports its instruction and extension thrusts to raise motivation and desire to pursue, disseminate, and apply research to communities.
