Paulinian Accountancy student tops mock board, ranks 2nd Overall Best Delegate at UP-JPIA ASSET ’24
Joana Rochelle Lyn D. Aragon, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) student, snags the Top 1 spot in the Mock Board Exams and Top 2 as the Overall Best Delegate in this year’s University of the Philippines-Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (UP-JPIA) Accountancy Students Extra-Curricular Training (ASSET), December 2.
Out of 561 applicants nationwide, Aragon advanced to the Top 100 on October 28. After completing the company interviews and acing the online exams, Aragon, along with fellow Paulinian BSA student Philip Zamaico M. Serenio, progressed to the Top 50 on November 19.
The top 50 delegates participated in a week of activities in UP Diliman, Quezon City, including company tours, talks, mock boards, case competitions, accounting quiz bees, and interview simulations.
The said event is an annual national summit organized by UP JPIA for accountancy students across the Philippines, offering valuable exposure to industry practices and skill-building opportunities.
Essence of joining ASSET
In an interview, Aragon expressed that she did not expect the result and credited the rigorous comprehensive and retention exams at Saint Paul School of Professional Studies (SPSPS) for giving her an advantage in acing the mock boards.
“One week before the ASSET, it was the comprehensive exams here [SPSPS], and 1 week before the comprehensive exams were my final exams for my Integrated Accounting subjects. Those [exams] were my preparations,” Aragon shared.
In her ASSET journey, Aragon acknowledged that while she has made significant progress, there is still much to learn in terms of accounting maturity and professional growth.
“I noticed that there’s still so much for me to learn in terms of accounting maturity and professional development. I would say they [delegates] are already at level 10, while I’m still at level 7. It gave me a broader perspective on how these kinds of people develop professionally,” Aragon said.
Diligence, supportive environment, and passion
In college, countless hours spent reviewing concepts, practicing problems, and preparing for exams can feel overwhelming.
The 4th-year BSA student attributed her current academic success to three things: diligence, supportive environment, and passion.
“Diligence—while others study 4 to 5 hours on average daily, I aim for 2 hours or 3 plus. I also surround myself with classmates who have the same goal as me,” Aragon emphasized.
Aragon shared that having a passion for what you do is an advantage. “If you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like it’s a responsibility. I solve problems because I love doing it.”
Aspiring to become the first Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in her family, Aragon is an academically inclined student and currently serves as the President of the SPSPS IMA Student Chapter.
